Mental Health Matters

As we mark Mental Health Awareness Day 2023, we've rounded up some tips to help you feel your best. We believe that mental health is a universal human right, so start with the basics and see where they take you.

Start with steps

Whether it's popping to the shops for a small pick-me-up, walking the dog an extra lap around the park or catching some vitamin D before the sun sets, a walk will do your mind wonders. Fresh air and exercise are proven to help you relax, de-stress and clear your head.

Tip: set yourself a goal - hit a certain number of steps each day and you'll soon slip into an easy routine.

Centre your soul

Grab a yoga mat, wear something comfortable and get ready to enter a new level of calm. From meditation to a grounding yoga session, it's important to listen your body. These moments will help to focus on underlying stresses, both mentally and physically, and will work to unravel them in a kind and soothing way.

Tip: Light a few candles during your mindfulness time, opting for scents such as lavender, clary sage and bergamot.

Switch it off

Is your phone as much of a bedtime essential as, well, your bed? Studies show that reducing screen time at least 1 hour before we hit the hay has positive benefits on our sleeping habits. If you need something to unwind with, a few pages of the book you're dipping in and out of will do the trick, or perhaps listening to a peaceful story on the Calm app will aid you in falling asleep.

Tip: In the morning, try to go 30 minutes before looking at your phone upon waking up. Take time to drink some water (hydration is key, always), get dressed and implement a skincare routine.

Talk the talk

You know how the saying goes: a problem shared truly is a problem halved. From friends to siblings and coworkers, you'll be surprised at how many people will lend an ear to any stresses you may want to vent. Simply speaking your worries out loud will begin the healing process, so go for a coffee or grab a chat on your commute and feel the weight lift from your shoulders.

Tip: Remember, it goes both ways. Can you sense something's a bit off? A simple 'how are things?' can kickstart a much-needed conversation, so take time to listen to anyone that needs you to.

If you need advice or someone to talk to, or know someone who does, there are numerous wonderful charities that can help. Here are a few we'd recommend:
