5 common winter skin concerns (and the best products to solve them)

When welcoming the winter with (somewhat reluctant) open arms, we’re likely waving hello to more than just the frosty weather. We’re sorry to report, but the dramatic drop in temperature is known to wreak havoc on our complexions, causing a fresh wave of skin concerns to make an untimely appearance.

If this sounds like something you’ve noticed, this might be your perfect read for 2025. We’re shining a spotlight on some of the most common winter skin concerns you might be experiencing this year – plus the best skincare products to help keep those troubles at bay.

Dryness & Flaking

Though it’s common for some to experience dryness and flaking all year round, external factors may exacerbate these symptoms significantly, such as a glacial temperatures, windier days, and the simple fact that cold air tends to hold less moisture. Not only this, but internal factors, like putting on your central heating, can also dry out the skin further, increasing the risk of dry patches, uneven texture, and flaking skin.

To combat these concerns, we recommend swapping those lighter moisturisers for a richer, thicker-textured formula that are packed with hydrating ingredients – as well as adding a problem-solving serum and nourishing night cream into your routine.

Look to products that contain hyaluronic acid (a fan-favourite hydrator believed to hold over 1000x its weight in water), peptides (perfect for maintaining skin hydration), beta glucan (the new humectant on the block, offering instant hydration and moisture retention), and glycerin (found in many crowd-pleasing formulas, known for helping to keep your outer layer of skin rich in moisture).

Dullness

Similarly, dry and dehydrated skin can often appear dull, lacking visible lustre, vitality and glow. This is due to the low humidity in the air. But luckily, there are many skin-novations available that are powered by radiance-boosting ingredients – perfect for restoring life to dull-looking skin.

Choose everyone’s favourite skin brightener, vitamin C, for a boost of luminosity – or, if your skin is a little too sensitive for that, try niacinamide as a gentler alternative. Both these ingredients have a whole host of benefits on top of their brightening properties – including balancing the look of uneven tone, minimising the appearance of dark spots, and boosting hydration – making both a real all-rounder in most skincare routines.

You can also exfoliate once a week to remove dead surface cells that may be contributing to your lacklustre skin. AHAs and BHAs should be your first point of call – think glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or the milder lactic acid, to help resurface complexions and reveal your newfound radiance.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Like dryness and dullness, the cold winter winds and lower humidity levels can cause the skin’s natural moisture to evaporate more quickly, making fine lines and wrinkles appear more noticeably than in the warmer months.

Skincare ingredients like peptides, collagen and retinol can help to put a plaster on these problems, working round the clock to regenerate the skin while plumping and minimising the look of fine lines.

What’s more? You should still be wearing SPF everyday – yes, even in the winter months! UV is prevalent all year round, meaning sun protection is vital come rain or shine, cloud or snow – given snow can actually reflect harmful rays back up at your skin. Skiers, take note!

Broken Barrier

Skin barrier health has become somewhat of a beauty buzzword in recent years. The skin barrier is responsible for protecting your skin – it helps to keep the goodness locked in and the badness shut out, providing a first-line defence against external aggressors for a strong, healthy-looking complexion. But what is it about winter that leaves the skin barrier more vulnerable than usual?

Arguably the biggest factor is when our skin moves from cooler temperatures, straight into hotter, drier air – so essentially, when we go from outdoors to indoors. This small (and unavoidable) step can compromise our barrier and cause skin concerns to arise, such as breakouts, irritation, redness, rough texture, and sensitivity.

If you’re looking to bolster your barrier against these environmental stressors, it’s time to get serious about your skincare routine. Ingredients like ceramides should be your first point of call, acting as the glue that keeps your cells together, and therefore promoting a visibly healthy complexion. We also love probiotics, colloidal oatmeal and SPF for keeping your barrier in tip-top condition.

Blemishes & Breakouts

Although breakouts are a year-round concern, and most definitely not exclusive to winter, colder days can cause blemishes to make themselves known. This is likely due to the cooler climate stressing out your skin, causing imbalances that could result in pesky spots rising to the skin’s surface.

Our favourite way to solve breakout concerns are targeted spot treatments. They’re often packed full of purifying and skin-soothing ingredients that help to calm the look and feel of angry blemishes through potent, active formulas. And we know this goes without saying, but don’t pick! You’ll prolong your skin’s recovery time – but not before making your blemish far bigger than it needed to be. Thank us later…
